ELECTRICAL AND AIR PIPE LINE CONNECTIONS

EFFECTIVE
USE
OF
A
CORE
As you may already know, leak detection through air leak testing is based on the principle that pressure
is reduced when there is a leak. This implies that even if there is the same degree of leak, depending on
the internal volume of the tested works, the pressure reduction rate will also vary. In other words, if
the internal volume were smaller, the pressure reduction rate would be greater; therefore, testing
precision and stability would increase. When it is possible, it is recommended to insert a core into the
work. A core is a devise that decreases the internal volume within the work. It should be made of a
material that will not leak and not change its shape and volume by the test pressure.
●
“THE CLEAN-UP TRIO
“Okay, the compressed air source for the air leak tester must be clean. So, I think I will use the
Clean-Up Trio”. Wait a minute! Oil intrusion is one of the major problems for an air leak tester.
Please do not use a lubricator!
●
IS TEMPERATURE AN ENEMY?
As previously mentioned, the air leak tester uses pressure reduction rates to conduct leak testing.
However, temperature and rate changes easily influence pressure. Perhaps the leak testing time is not
very long so it may not be necessary to be extremely cautious about this issue, but it may be wise to pay
some attention to the precautions.
①
Are Hot Water Wash, Quenching or Welding processes performed prior to the leak testing procedure?
If there are, cool down the work before conducting the leak test, or reconsider the formation of the
process line.
②
Are the works to be tested sensitive to temperature? Are they designed or produced for the purpose of
good heat conduction such as oil coolers, and radiators? These types of works receive a great deal of
influence from even weak drafts, and testing accuracy will be affected. In such cases, provide a draft
shielding to cover the work-clamping portion of the system. This also provides protection for the
operator from accidentally clamping their hands.
③
It is recommended to keep the works at the same level as the tester. When works are stored at low
levels, such as the floor, while waiting their turn for testing, they may become too cold for the testing
process. Keep them at the same level as the tester and maintain a stable temperature to improve
testing accuracy and attain desirable results.
