General
Device concept
The TPS 320i, TPS 400i and TPS 500i
MIG/MAG power sources are completely
digitised microprocessor-controlled inverter
power sources.
The modular design and potential for sys-
tem add-ons ensure a high degree of flexi-
bility. The devices can be adapted to any
specific situation.
Functional princi-
ple
The central control and regulation unit of the power sources is coupled with a digital signal
processor. The central control and regulation unit and the signal processor control the en-
tire welding process.
During the welding process, the actual data is measured continuously and the device re-
sponds immediately to any changes. Control algorithms ensure that the desired target
state is maintained.
This results in:
-
a precise welding process
-
exact reproducibility of all results
-
excellent weld properties.
Brief description
of MIG / MAG
pulse welding
and the CMT
process
MIG/MAG pulse welding
MIG/MAG pulse welding is a pulsed arc process with controlled material transition.
In the process the energy supply in the base current phase is reduced so far, that the arc
is just burning stable and the workpiece surface is pre-heated. In the main current-phase
a precisely metered pulse of current provides a specific release of a welding material drop.
This principle guarantees a low-spatter welding and precise work in low-power, since un-
wanted shorts with simultaneous explosion of a drop and thus uncontrolled spatter are al-
most impossible.
The CMT process
CMT = Cold Metal Transfer
The CMT process is a special short arc MIG welding process.
In the CMT process the digital process control recognizes a short circuit and supports the
droplet detachment by the retraction of the wire electrode. The withdrawal of the wire elec-
trode can be carried out up to 90 times per second.
Special features of the CMT process is a low heat input and a controlled, low power mate-
rial transition.
