How to - Operate the Camera
’
s TEC cooler
The Starfish camera can be operated with the internal TEC cooler optionally enabled.
You do not need to turn on the cooler, nor have its power cable attached, in order to
take pictures with the camera. This is true for imaging sessions where the camera is
used for short exposure settings like planetary imaging or operation as a guide camera.
You would, however, want to turn the cooler on when imaging deep space objects that
require long exposure durations. This is because with long exposures, the dark noise
will be a significant noise source in the final images. It is recommended that the cooler
be used for any exposures longer than about 15 seconds.

To use the TEC cooler, you will need to provide a +12VDC power source. The camera
comes with both an AC power supply and a battery cable for use with a user supplied
battery. A standard, auto style cigarette light plug is used on the battery cable.
If the camera does not detect that the external power cable is attached to the camera, it
will display a warning message and not allow you to turn on the TEC cooler.
