Managing with a terminal
The second way for managing your S.CON1M media converter is by using a terminal
emulation. In order to do this you will need a PC (or a terminal) with a terminal
emulation program (such as ‘Hyper Terminal’).
Connect the supplied serial cable between the converter (miniDIN side) and a serial
port on the PC with the terminal emulation (on the DB9 side). Start the emulation
program and reset the device (recommended).
After system initialization you will get to the
device’s main menu
(figure 7).
The header of the main menu contains details regarding the software version, the
device
vendor and the model.

Select 1 for viewing the device status, 2 for device control or 3 for software download.
Selecting 1 will result in displaying the
status of the device
(figure 8). This screen
includes the port’s status and the device’s status (namely, temperature). Port status
include the link status (both TP and FO), auto-negotiation state, link speed (10/100M)
the duplex mode whether the port is connected, and the fault propagation status – FO
to TP, and vice versa. In the bottom of the screen appears the management status – if
it is connected to the TP port, or not.

Choosing option 2 in the main menu will list the device control menu (figure 9). This
menu enables you to reset the device and change its operating parameters. Return to
the main menu by choosing 0.
