POLE PRUNER SAFETY WARNINGS (43 289)
f
Prolonged use of a power tool (or other machines)
exposing the operator to vibrations may produce
white finger disease (Raynaud’s phenomenon) or
carpal tunnel syndrome. These conditions reduce
the hand’s ability to feel and regulate temperature,
produce numbness and burning sensations and
may cause nerve and circulation damage and tis-
sue necrosis. All factors which contribute to white
finger disease are not known, but cold weather,
smoking and diseases or physical conditions that
affect blood vessels and blood transport, as well as
high vibration levels and long periods of exposure
to vibration are mentioned as factors in the devel-
opment of white finger disease. In order to reduce
the risk of white finger disease and carpal tunnel
syndrome, please note the following:
Wear gloves and keep hands warm
Maintain a firm grip at all times, but do not
squeeze the handles with constant, excessive
pressure
Take frequent breaks
All of the above mentioned precautions do not
guarantee that you will not sustain white finger
disease or carpal tunnel syndrome. Therefore,
continual and regular users should closely monitor
the condition of their hands and fingers. If any of
the above symptoms appear, seek medical advice
immediately.
f
Adjust the carrying strap to your body hight for
safe and easy handling.
f
Add chain saw oil (preferably biodegradable) until
tank/reservoir is full.
f
ALWAYS WEAR SUITABLE CLOTHING: In addition
to required safety equipment, it is advisable to
wear suitable clothing (long sleeve shirt and trou-
sers) when using this tool.
f
Keep all parts of the body away from the saw chain.
Do not remove cut material nor hold material to
be cut when blades are moving. Make sure the
tool is switched off and unplugged when clearing
jammed material. A moment of inattention while
operating the pole pruner may result in serious
personal injury.
f
Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces
only, because the saw chain may contact hidden
wiring or its own cord. Saw chains contacting a
“live” wire may make exposed metal parts of the
power tool “live” and could give the operator an
electric shock.
f
Maintain a firm grip, with thumbs and fingers en
-
circling the pole pruner handles, with both hands
on the pole pruner and position your body and
arm to allow you to resist kickback forces. Kickback
forces can be controlled by the operator, if proper
precautions are taken. Do not let go of the pole
pruner.
f
Do not operate a pole pruner in a tree. Operation
of a pole pruner while up in a tree may result in per-
sonal injury.
f
Always keep proper footing and operate the prun-
er only, when standing on fixed, secure and level
surface. Slippery or unstable surfaces such as lad-
ders may cause a loss of balance or control of the
pruner.
f
When cutting a branch be alert for kickback. When
the branch is broached it can bend down and jam
the saw chain.
f
Carry the pole pruner switched off, by the front
handle, the blade pointing forward. When trans-
porting or storinging always fit the guide bar cover.
Proper handling of the pole pruner will reduce the
likelihood of accidental contact with the moving
saw chain.
f
Follow instructions for lubricating, chain tension
-
ing and changing accessories. Improperly ten-
sioned or lubricated chain may either break or in-
crease the chance for kickback.
f
Keep handles dry, clean, and free from oil and
grease. Greasy, oily handles are slippery causing
loss of control.
f
Cut wood only. Don’t use pole pruner for purposes
not intended. For example: do not use pole pruner
for cutting plastic, masonry or non-wood building
materials. Use of the pole pruner for operations
different than intended could result in a hazardous
situation.
f
Causes and operator prevention of kickback:
Kickback may occur when the nose or tip of the
guide bar touches an object, or when the wood
closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut.
Tip contact in some cases may cause a sudden re-
verse reaction, kicking the guide bar up and back
towards the operator.
Pinching the saw chain along the top of the
guide bar may push the guide bar rapidly back
towards the operator.
Either of these reactions may cause you to lose
control of the pole pruner which could result in
serious personal injury. As a pole pruner user,
you should take several steps to keep your cut-
ting jobs free from accident or injury.
Kickback is the result of tool misuse and/or incor
-
rect operating procedures or conditions and can
be avoided by taking proper precautions as given
below:
f
Only use replacement bars and chains specified by
the manufacturer. Incorrect replacement bars and
chains may cause chain breakage and/or kickback.
f
Follow the manufacturer’s sharpening and main
-
tenance instructions for the saw chain. Decreas-
ing the depth gauge height can lead to increased
kickback.
f
When working with the machine, always hold it
firmly with both hands and provide for a secure
stance. The garden tool is guided more secure with
both hands.
f
Always wait until the machine has come to a com-
plete stop before placing it down. The saw chain
can jam and lead to loss of control over the garden
tool.
f
Switch off and disconnect the pole pruner when
changing the working position, when laying down
or during transport.
f
A cut branch can lead to personal injury by falling
on you or springing back from the ground. Cut lon-
