USING THE COMPUTER PORT (RS-232)
The RS-232 port can be used to connect the SD3 to a personal computer in order to do memory backups,
software updates and to load fixture profiles. You will need to get a null modem cable available at any
computer store. Connect the 9 pin RS-232 port on the Show Designer 3 to one of the serial “COM” ports
on your PC. Some COM ports use a 25 pin connector and some use a 9 pin. Most null modem cables
come with both types of connectors.
CONFIGURING YOU COMPUTER
Elation offers a program that can be downloaded from www.elationlighting.com called “SD Backup” that
is designed to handle communication between a PC and the Show Designer lighting controllers. Determine

type of cable described in the previous section. The program supports COM 1 or COM 2 on your PC.
