3.12 FIVE SECTION ARROW SUPPRESSION PROTECTED-PERMISSIVE
MONITORING (PPLT5)
The MMU-16LE
SmartMonitor
®
is designed to monitor an intersection with up to four
approaches using the five section PPLT5 Arrow Suppression movement. For monitoring
purposes a PPLT5 Arrow Suppression approach is logically defined as a five input “channel
pair” consisting of the solid Red Arrow, solid Yellow Arrow, solid Green Arrow (protected),
solid Yellow Ball, and solid Green Ball (permissive).
The Arrow Suppression strategy is being used to provide a part-time-of-day non-permissive
operation, where the “dog-house” red indication is driven by the protected left turn phase
load switch, rather than the overlap. It is therefore the protected left turn phase load switch
which may be dark at the appropriate points in the cycle when the overlap green or yellow
ball outputs are on during hours of protected-permissive operation.
It should be noted that in this application all five signal faces are dedicated to the left turn
approach. This mode is not intended for a basic Protected / Permissive “doghouse” style
signal approach where the RYG Ball section is intended for the thru vehicle phase.
- NOTE -
EDI does not provide any guidelines, warrants, or recommendations for the use of
protected/permissive left-turn phasing. The underlying assumption is that the traffic
engineer has decided that this form of protected/permissive control is the most
appropriate left-turn treatment, and all necessary considerations have been made.
A PPLT5 Arrow Suppression approach is actually monitored using two physical channels of
the MMU-16LE
SmartMonitor
®
. One additional load switch is required for each PPLT5
Arrow Suppression approach to be monitored. Thus a TS-2 cabinet providing four vehicle
phases, four pedestrian phases, and four PPLT5 Arrow Suppression approaches would
require sixteen load switches. Configuration settings are described in Section 6.3.15. In the
description below, channel numbers are shown for the Type 16 TS-2 mode of the MMU-
16LE
SmartMonitor
®
.
Channel numbers shown in brackets “[ ]” refer to the respective
channels when operating in the Type 12 TS-1 mode
(see Section 1.4.2).
3.12.1 BASIC PPLT5 ARROW SUPPRESSION MODE
The cabinet must be wired such that for each PPLT5 Arrow Suppression approach the Red
Arrow, Yellow Arrow, and Green Arrow (protected) is driven by a load switch monitored on
channels 1, 3, 5, and 7. The associated Yellow Ball and Green Ball must be driven by a
load switch monitored on channels 13, 14, 15, and 16 [9, 10, 11, 12] respectively. The
