SONIX VW2 TECHNICAL MANUAL
TM368 / A May 2022 www.eaton.com
1 Introduction
These instructions are intended for all users who will
have to install, commission, configure and setup the
Sonix Vw2 Termination Unit.
For this, the manual is action-oriented and explains how
to achieve a certain objective on a step-by-step basis.
It is assumed that you have the necessary electrical,
electronic and telecommunications experience to
undertake the work. If in doubt, please consult Eaton.
1.1 Eaton quality assurance
Eaton design, manufacture, install and commission all
our products to the highest standards of quality. This
quality process is embraced and adopted throughout the
group in all areas of our operations.
This is demonstrated by our compliance and strict
adherence to ISO 9001, 14001, ATEX, IECEX policies.
On receipt of the product, ensure that the cartons are
undamaged and that the contents are all correct and
complete.
Should this product reach you in an unsatisfactory
condition please report this to Eaton to enable us to
rectify and investigate the fault in a speedy manner.
1.2 About Sonix
The Sonix PA/GA system is designed around a highly
secure & flexible architecture, that removes the need
for lengthy engineering cycles, bespoke and costly
software, custom field engineering or expensive onsite
support.
This results in a highly effective and flexible
communications solution for the next generation.
The Sonix system is rigorously designed for installation
in both safe area or potentially explosive environments,
using latest protection philosophies including EEx-e, -d,
-i, -m and -p to ensure the highest levels of safety whilst
increasing operational features.
The Sonix PA/GA System is designed to meet and
surpass the requirements of ATEX, IECEx, DNV, BV,
ABS, IMO and PFEER, with other regional certifications
pending.
Please refer to Sonix system technical manual for any
further information.
1.3 About the product
Sonix Vw2 unit is a compact, high capacity beacon loop
control and monitoring device. It autonomously monitors
and supervises beacon cable installation and loop
integrity with a discrete, non-visual signal, and at the
same time operates as client to the 2Mx (PAGA Central
Matrix controller), i.e. it receives data packets, acts on
that data and sends a response back to the 2Mx.
The robust and industrial design of the module ensures
its protection against open and short circuit associated
with field loop faults. In the event of such common
field loop faults, the Vw2 rapidly detects, reports and
diagnoses the fault, reporting this information back to
the 2Mx controller and the SAS (Sonix Administration
Software – available separately from Eaton) application,
with the latter also serving as the configuration and
monitoring tool.
The unit – in the form of a PCB held by a din rail carrier
– is provided with industrial beacon loop terminals to
securely and safely isolate the field cables for testing
and fault rectification. The Vw2 always ensures that field
beacons are driven with power signals in both directions.
This self-healing ring design guarantees that, in the event
of an open circuit condition, critical visual communication
is not lost. Additionally, the PCB form of the unit allows
for quick and easy installation and replacement of any
units, while keeping low rack footprint.
The Vw2 provides dual channel control and monitoring of
beacon loops, and up to six Vw2 units can be connected,
providing 12 channels of independent control (if more
than 12 channels are required, please talk to the Eaton
representative).
Connection to the 2Mx module is maintained via a fully
redundant, self-healing data loop consisting of two
RJ45/Cat 6A cables – this type of connection is central
to the architecture of the Sonix PA/GA system. This
ensures that connectivity of the Vw2 is vastly simplified,
plug and play, quick to install and reliable. If extra
equipment is needed within the system, it can simply
be added to the loop without extensive re-wiring of the
system.
All inputs and outputs are always designed to be fail safe
and reliable to ensure consistent, unfailing operation.
