General Location Tips and Notes (cont’d)
•
The antenna must be vertical and at least 1.3 metres (chest height) above ground level
•
Do not mount the unit in a metal cage or on a metal surface; if this is unavoidable, an external
antenna with an extension cable must be used
•
Do not mount the unit in an outside environment
•
The minimum range in a typical building is 30 metres. This can be substantially increased in
open indoor spaces or in areas with low RF absorption and reflections, especially where the unit
can be fitted high above ground level
•
Try to mount the antenna as high as possible – this will generally increase reception range
•
Line of sight range in outdoor open spaces is typically 250-300 metres – this can be extended to
1KM or more when well above ground level, and/or when using higher power transmitters and
suitable directional Yagi antennas
•
Care should be taken if the radio is to work between floors of factories etc… The flooring will
normally be reinforced with steel and can cause attenuation
•
If there is any doubt concerning the location, carry out a Site Range Survey as described later in
this document
