3-6 Using WebCam Control with the WDM driver
The number of steps (levels) for zooming depend on the image’s output size you select on the
Stream Format dialog box (see Figure 3-1 on page 3-1):
Exposure
The best image quality obtained from your WebCam depends on adequate lighting. All other
image adjustments also depend on the presence of adequate lighting.
WebCam’s sensitivity is similar to that of a home video camera. Although it can operate in low
light, the resulting image will not be as clear. Incandescent lighting is preferable to fluorescent
lighting. If you are attaching WebCam to a laptop computer, you will find that outdoor lighting
also works well.
Use the Exposure slider on the Camera Control tabbed page of the Source Properties dialog
box to adjust the amount of time used for exposing each video frame to the light.
Increasing the Exposure value boosts the sensitivity of the WebCam’s sensor, causing it to be
more sensitive to low levels of lighting. If the lighting in your environment is dim, increase this
value to capture a brighter, and thus more detailed image.
