(f) The ordinary move of the pawn is simply one square
straight forward
–
it cannot retreat. When making a
capture, the pawn moves one square diagonally
forward.
Here the white pawn may move one square forward or
capture the rook. The black pawns cannot move.
On its first move, the pawn may go two squares
straight forward if the player wishes (and the two
squares ahead are vacant). There are 2 more special
kinds of pawn move: the capture en passant, and pawn
promotion.
Suppose that one of your pawns is on its starting
square, and there is an enemy pawn ready to capture
it if it moves one square forward. The rules state that
even if your pawn goes two squares forward, the
opposing pawn may still capture it on the next move (but not later), just as if it had only advanced one
square.
