The most important piece is the king, since
the object of the game is to put your opponent’s king in a position
where it cannot avoid being captured.
At the start, the pieces are arranged like this:

8.1.2 The moves
White makes the first move, then the players move
alternately. When it is his turn, a player must move
one of his pieces onto a square which is either
vacant or occupied by an enemy piece. In the latter
case the enemy piece is “captured”, i.e. removed
from the board. Each type of piece has its
characteristic way of moving.
(a)
The king
moves one square at a time, in any direction
–
forwards, backwards, sideways or diagonally.
(b)
The queen
can move any number of squares at once, in a straight line
–
horizontally, vertically or
diagonally.
