13. Some terms explained
Resolution:
The term “resolution” denotes the number of dots/pixels on a screen (or a digital camera), e.g.
1024*768 (1024 horizontal dots next to each other and 768 vertical dots/lines below each other).
TFT monitors have a set resolution, which you should set under all circumstances for the display of
a computer image. Otherwise the display will be fuzzy.
Cathode ray monitors can display different resolutions, which may be better or worse depending on
the quality of the monitor.
AV
AV is the abbreviation for “Audio & Video”. For example, an AV cable is a connection cable for audio
and video signals, e.g. a cable with 3 cinch plugs at one end (one for video, the other two for the stereo
audio signal).
Image refresh rate
This value indicates, how often per second an image is displayed on the monitor, screen or TV.
With common cathode ray monitors, this value should be at least 75Hz, with TFT monitors, a value
of 60 Hz is sufficient due to the inertia of the pixels.
TVs usually display 50 half images (50 Hz) that are nestled in each other. Easier put, half image 1
consists of lines 1, 3, 5, etc. of a full image, half image 2 of the lines 2, 4, 6, etc.
There are also modern 100 Hz TVs where each half image is displayed double. This serves to reduce
image flickering.
CVBS
CVBS is another name for FBAS, meaning a normal analog colour video signal. Cinch sockets on
AV devices or the cinch plugs of AV cables normally use the colour yellow for this signal.
S-video
With the S-video signal, the brightness and colour information is transmitted on separates lines. This
results in a better image quality.
TFT
TFT is commonly used for flat screens, e.g. TFT monitor or TFT screen. You could also say “LCD”,
“LC monitor” or “LCD monitor”, it makes no difference.
