Working with Configuration Files

There are four kinds of configuration files:

»

running-config – a virtual file containing the currently running system configuration.

»

startup-config – contains the boot-time configuration. When configuration is changed, it must
be copied to startup-config in order to be applied at the next boot.

»

default-config – a read-only file used when configuration is restored to defaults. This file is
also used if startup-config is missing. It contains product-specific customizations to the default
settings of the device.

»

User-defined – configuration files created by the user (up to 31). These are typically used for
backups or variants of startup-config.

All of these except running-config are stored in the flash file system. The available operations are:
copy source destination

where source and destination can be one of:

»

running-config

»

startup-config (or flash:startup-config)

»

flash:filename

»

tftp://server[:port]/path-to-file

dir

List the contents of the flash file system. more flash: filename

Outputs the contents of the file to the terminal.

flash: filename

Erases the specific file.
