EIAITIA-449
signals
to
travel
greater
distances
than
EIAITIA-232

The
recommended
distance
limits
for
EIAITIA-449
shown
in Table
2-7
are
also
valid
for
V.35
X.21
and
EIA-530 However
you
can
get
good
results
at
distances
and
rates
far
greater
than
these
In
common
practice
EIAITIA-449
and EIA-530
support
2-Mbps
rates
and
V.35
supports
4-Mbps
rates
without
any problems
however
do
so
at
your
own
risk
Note
We
do
not
recommend
that
you exceed
specified
transmission
rate
and
distance
limits
SONET
Connections
The
SONET
specification
for
fiber-optic
transmission
defines
two
types
of fiber
single
mode
and
multimode
Modes
can
be
thought
of
as
bundles
of
light
rays
entering
the
fiber
at
particular
angle
Single-mode
fiber
allows
only
one
mode
of
light
to
propagate
through
the fiber while
multimode
fiber
allows
multiple
modes
of
light
to
propagate
through
the fiber
Because
multiple
modes
of
light
propagating
through
the
fiber
travel
different
distances
depending
on
the entry angles
causing
them
to
arrive
at
the destination
at different
times
phenomenon
called
modal
dispersion
single-mode
fiber
is
capable
of higher
bandwidth
and
greater
cable
run distances
than
multimode
fiber
The
maximum
distances for single-mode
and multimode
transmissions
as
defined
by
SONET
are
in
Table

If
the distance
between
two
connected
stations
is
greater
than
these

can
result
making
transmission
