Catalyst 6500 Series Switches Installation Guide

Chapter 3      Installing the Switch

  Installing a Catalyst 6504-E Switch Chassis

Step 3

With a person standing at each side of the chassis, grasp the chassis handle with one hand, and use the 
other hand near the back of the chassis for balance. Slowly lift the chassis in unison. Avoid sudden twists 
or moves to prevent injury.

Tip

Have a third person install the rack-mount screws while two people support the chassis in the rack 
enclosure. 

Step 4

Align the mounting holes in the rack-mount bracket with the mounting holes in the equipment rack.

Step 5

If you want to install one or both of the optional cable guides, position the cable guides so that the cable 
guide mounting holes are aligned with rack-mount holes and the rack post holes. 

Step 6

Install a minimum of eight 10-32 or 12-24 screws (four on each side) through the cable guide mounting 
holes, rack-mount bracket holes, rack post holes, and into the clip nuts to secure the cable guides and the 
chassis to the rack post. (See 

Figure 3-6

.)

Step 7

Use a tape measure or a level to verify that the chassis is installed straight and level.
