H. Firmware Upgrade
The imageRUNNER C3170 Series main firmware controlling functions are
stored in the hard disk drive (HDD) and the ROMs of the device. The
imageRUNNER C3170 Series introduces a new way to update firmware via a
USB flash drive
. A PC is still necessary to download the firmware to the
USB flash drive.
The USB flash drive specifications are as follows:
•
USB 1.1 or higher
•
1 GB or more capacity
•
FAT (FAT16 or FAT32) for format, only single partition
Note: Canon USA tested two Lexar thumb drive models (Jump Drive Sport
and Jump Drive Pro) and neither communicated with the imageRUNNER
C3170 Series.
Refer to the Service Manual for complete upgrading procedures.
I. Computer Requirements For Upgrading
The following are the recommended Desktop PC or laptop specifications
use for the download:
•
CPU: Intel Celeron 400MHz or higher
•
Memory: 64MB of RAM
•
Free HDD Capacity: 600MB of available hard disk space
•
Network: 10Base-T/100Base-TX or PCMCIA slot (Ethernet Card) must be
available.
•
CD-ROM Drive: Firmware is provided in the form of a CD. However, a CD-
ROM drive is not required if the firmware can be copied from the CD to a
PC via a network.
•
Downloading tool (software): SST version 3.21 or later (provided in CD)
•
Operating environment: Windows 98SE/2000/XP, Windows NT 4.0
•
Connection cable: Crossover cable (Fast Ethernet: Category 5 or higher)
J. Service Mode
Service mode can be used to predict the life expectancy of certain
consumable parts including: pick-up rollers, feed rollers, separation rollers,
feeder, cleaning web and paper deck. The number of sheets listed in service
mode indicates the usage of these parts. This helps the technician plan for
replacement parts of subsequent visits.
