Log Collector
Overview
A method to collect the operational status log of the host machine will be provided as a
means to analyze failures occurred in the field. When a request has been made to the HQ of
the sales company by the CINC division in charge of field follow-up, collect the log by using
the tool.
■
Scope of Application
The fax function of the host machine is used as the temporary storage destination of the log.
Therefore, the tool cannot be used on a model without the fax function.
The tool is supported by Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.
The machine and the PC for operating the tool are connected directly by a USB Cable.
Multiple host machines cannot be connected to a PC. Connect only one device to the PC via
USB.
●
What to Prepare
• Device
• USB Cable (Connector shape: A-B)
• PC with a USB port (OS: Windows XP, Vista, 7)
• Tool (CanonLogCollector.zip)*
* Follow the instruction of the sales company HQ to obtain the tool.
■
Operation Procedure
NOTE:
The fax function has a data retention mechanism.
Backup of data is retained for up to 5 minutes after turning OFF the main power.
Collect the log while the data is retained.
1) Connecting the USB Cable
Connect the USB Cable while both the machine and the PC are in operation.
2) Decompressing CanonLogCollector.zip
Create a folder with write permission on the PC. When CanonLogCollector.zip is
decompressed, CanonLogCollector.exe is extracted.
3) Starting the tool
Double-click CanonLogCollector.exeto to start it. The CanonLogCollector screen will appear.
4) Preparation of the device
Turn OFF the power switch while the machine is in the status (the machine is frozen,
misbehaving, etc.) whose log you want to collect.
5) Turn ON the power switch before the data is deleted (within 5 minutes).
6. Collecting the log
Press the [Start] button on the CanonLogCollector screen. When "Receiving log is
successfully finished." appears, press the [Exit Program] button to quit the tool.
The collected log is created in TXT format in the folder where CanonLogCollector.exe
exists. Obtain the created log and send it to the sales company HQ. In the following figure,
"usb_2011901_132658.log" is the log file. The size of a log file is 300 KB or less. The time
needed to collect the log is approx.10 seconds.
NOTE:
While the machine is in operation, log information is continually added. However, the
storage area is limited to 300KB, so the information is overwritten in the order from the
oldest log information. Since log information may be overwritten when a long time has
passed after occurrence of the error, be sure to collect the log as soon as possible.
