Adjusted Ring Length (ARL)

Optimal design of the network installation requires contingency planning
for worst-case scenarios involving the physical removal of a trunk cable
segment in the installation. ARL is the variable factored into the design
equation to account for the diminishment of the ring’s maximum drive
distance capability resulting from any trunk cable disruption which causes
the signal to be routed from the primary ring path to the secondary ring
path.

For example, for an installation composed entirely of passive hubs, the
ARL would be defined as the sum of all trunk cable minus the shortest
trunk cable length doubled. In this case, the aggregate trunk cable
installation could not exceed the maximum length specified for the type
and category of trunk cable used. In a typical installation composed of
both active and passive devices and multiple wiring closets the calculation
of the ARL becomes complex. Consult your network manager or any of
the Cabletron Systems technical support resources for assistance with
designing a fault-resistant Token Ring cabling scheme.

Working With Mixed STP Cable Types

If STP cable types are mixed in the Token Ring installation, you must
compensate for the different cable attenuation tolerances. For example,
IBM Types 6 and 9 STP cable can be run for only 2/3 the distance IBM
Type 1 STP cable.

4.3 CONNECTING LOBE PORT CABLING

Prior to connecting straight-through lobe cabling to the MicroMMAC-T,
ensure that your overall cabling design accommodates the recommended
maximum lobe cable lengths provided by the different cable grades
specified in

UTP to STP Impedance Matching

To connect a UTP lobe segment from the MicroMMAC-22T/24T to a
station that supports STP cabling, but does not have an internal media
filter, you must attach a media filter adapter to the STP port on the station.

The media filter provides impedance matching between UTP lobe cable
and the STP Type 1 port.

Figure 4-2

illustrates an example UTP lobe

cabling configuration demonstrating how the media filter is used is in the
installation.
