Bonding and Grounding
Definitions
Your boat is protected by bonding and grounding sys-
tems that satisfy the recommendations outlined in
ABYC Standard E-11
. These two systems work
together to provide solutions to common problems and
risks on the water.
The
bonding
system connects various non-current
carrying metal components to a common electrical
contact. The bonding system might be connected to
an optional external anode. The bonding system
helps reduce the galvanic corrosion of all metal com-
ponents connected to it.
The
grounding
system is a series of redundant con-
ductors used to connect metallic parts of direct current
(DC) devices to the (engine) negative buss system for
the purpose of dissipating electrical potential.
Bonding
The bonding system normally starts with an external
anode located below the water line at the center of the
transom. A #8 AWG green marine cable connects the
anode to the bonding system at a buss bar.
The fuel tank, engine crash rail, hand rails, engine
bracket, aluminum gunwale boards, and tow post are
also connected to the bonding buss bar with #8 AWG
green marine cables.
Note: All bonding wires and cables are
green
