Bonding System
Your fuel tank is part of an electrical bonding system.
The bonding system connects various non-current car-
rying metal components to a common electrical con-
tact. Your boat’s bonding system helps reduce the
galvanic corrosion of all metal components connected
to it.
The bonding system connects metal components such
as the fuel tank, engine crash rail, hand rails, engine
bracket, aluminum gunwale boards, and tow post to a
common bonding buss bar using #8 AWG green
marine cables. The bonding system might include an
external anode.
The bonding buss system is also connected to the
grounding buss system to reduce the possibility of a
voltage challenge between the two systems.
Routine Maintenance
Check the bonding system and its optional external
anode regularly. Check the green cables and their
connections at each component. Replace the external
anode if it is less than one-half its original size. Check
for electrical continuity throughout the system using an
ohmmeter or a continuity light.
Repair
You can access the bonding cables and their connec-
tions through the deck access plates and access
hatches. Refer to the
Fuel System Diagram
in this
section for component locations.
To replace a damaged bonding cable, remove the
connecting screws at each end of the cable. Attach a
new length of #8 AWG green marine cable to one end
of the faulty cable and use the faulty cable to pull the
new cable into position. Secure the new cable to the
bonding tabs with screws. Coat the bonding tabs and
screws with liquid neoprene.
Recheck the bonding system for electrical continuity.
