SCREEN BLAUBOX
Screen 6 offers a very basic outline on how to use the program to guide
the consumer down the right purchase path.
GUIDANCE
This is an outline of some basic qualifying questions, regarding personal
preference, to ask the customer (in a professional manner) in order to fit
the woofer box to that person’s wants and needs.

What kind of car is it? With a sedan, you usually have considerable
room for a sub box behind the rear seat.
For a hatchback, you may have
similar room but may be limited by the height, or appearance, of a
finished box.
How much money do they want to spend? This determines whether you have
the funds to build a nifty bandpass/isobaric enclosure.
Does the customer want accurate or
bass? If they only listen to
rap music they can tolerate a bump in the frequency response around
and will often yield higher power handling for real “pounders“.
Are they looking for an “unseen” box? A
box emits all of its
sound from the port so this can offer a good solution for a “hidden”
box not having any kind of speaker visible.
How much power do they need or want?
If the person is a real “pounder”
a sealed box, or single vented
box, should be used to improve
the power handling of the woofer.
A simple vented, or double vented
box, will unload the woofer at low frequencies thus allowing
it to bottom out on peaks and possibly destroy itself.
WOOFER CHOICE
Here you can make some decisions on which woofer to use.
Some woofers can
offer significant benefits over other units.
1. Woofer size; want does the user really want?
“bigger
The mistaken concept of
remains horribly rampant.
Very often, a smaller
woofer in a given box will provide a lower cutoff frequency than the
larger woofer.
This can be beautifully
on
“PLOT
RESPONSE” screen.
2.
To guide the customer into the best box for their installation, the
“BOX STYLE” feature of BLAUBOX is very useful at comparing different
woofer/box combinations in hopes of coming up with a good compromise in
performance, complexity, and price.
3. Be smart and start most of the designs with
woofers. They are
forgiving of small boxes and offer a great compromise in power
handling, space requirements, and performance.
4. Try to use woofers with high Qts values (0.5-0.8) for sealed boxes and
low Qts values for vented boxes (0.25-0.5).
designs favor Qts
values around 0.5 for optimum performance.
5. Try to maintain 4 ohm loads on the amplifiers through series or
parallel connection of the speakers.
Even though most amplifiers today
are 2 ohm stable, it still strains the amps due to the significant heat
dissipation required of the amplifier for low impedance loads.
6. Try to match the power output of the amplifier with the woofer’s rms
power handling values.
Huge amplifiers driving 50 watt rms speakers is
kind of “boneheaded”.
