Input level
A level of relative analog signal strength obtained
from the attached telephone equipment.
Interrupted ring
A configuration option for the Multiserver 500
voice/fax channel fitted with an FXS interface
module. When the channel is configured for
interrupted ring, it rings the attached telephone set
in a fixed cadence. See

Jumper
A miniature connector or wire that fits over, and
electrically connects, two pins. A jumper either
opens or shorts the electrical connection between
the two pins.
Key telephone system
A telephone system in which the telephones have
multiple pushbuttons to allow call out directly,
without dialing an access number such as 9, and
select incoming calls by pushing a button.
Generally, a key telephone system has limited
internal telephone-to-telephone capacity.
Link
A communications circuit or transmission path
connecting two Multiserver 500s.
Loopback
A diagnostic feature used to test Multiserver 500s
and related equipment either locally or from end to
end over the link and back.
Maximum bandwidth
The amount of bandwidth allocated to the
asynchronous data channel when the voice channel
is not in use.
Maximum output level
A configuration option for an E&M 4-wire voice/fax
channel. Allows for a maximum output level of +7
dBm.
NLP
Nonlinear processing, a method used to suppress
residual echo.
Off-hook
A line condition caused when a telephone handset
is removed from its cradle.
On-hook
A line condition that exists when a telephone
handset is resting in its cradle.
PBX, private branch exchange
A privately owned phone system installed within the
premises of an organization. It allows
communication among users within the
organization, as well as between those users and the
outside world. It differs from a key telephone
system, in that the user must dial an access number
such as 9 to get an outside line.
Pulse dialing
Method used for call addressing in rotary
telephones by short pulses of on-hook/off-hook.
Also known as decadic pulsing in Europe.
Pulsed DC
A variation on the E&M signaling format, also
known as Ron-Tron, used in France. A call connect
request is made by sending a pulse of a medium
duration on the transmit or “Tron” lead, and the
call request is acknowledged by a return pulse of
the same duration on the receive or “Ron” lead. See

RAM
Random access memory. A storage device into
which data can be entered or read from.
Repeated ring
