3.5 The ULTRAMIZER function
Like the VIRTUOSO, the ULTRAMIZER function is an aid in determining the correct parameter settings. It has
two different operating modes which function in dependence on the Peak Limiter.
ULTRAMIZER PROCESS
If the Peak Limiter is disabled, the ULTRAMIZER continuously monitors the audio material and increases the
input gain until the Threshold of one of the six bands is exceeded and a gain reduction corresponding to the
ULTRAMIZER Process parameter has been achieved. The Thresholds of the other bands are then adjusted to
provide approximately the same level attenuation in all bands. To use this function effectively, enable the band
link function and set the Threshold parameter for all six bands to the same value. Next, set the intensity of the
ULTRAMIZER with the ULTRAMIZER Process parameter.
If the Peak Limiter is enabled, the ULTRAMIZER will additionally attempt to raise the output gain to the point
that the Peak Limiter also realizes an effective level attenuation corresponding to the ULTRAMIZER Process
parameter.
ULTRAMIZER RANGE
The ULTRAMIZER Range parameter determines the range in dB over which the ULTRAMIZER should be
active. This permits fade-outs and brief program pauses to be excluded from the ULTRAMIZER's loudness
optimization.
3.6 Peak Limiter section
The Peak Limiter provides the option of limiting the maximum level of the ULTRA-DYNE PRO's output indepen-
dently of all other control functions. It was designed for use in conjunction with the Compressor section.
Downstream equipment can thus be protected from signal peaks, short-term overloads and overmodulation
(transmitters, etc.) regardless of their function.

Fig. 3.3: The Peak Limiter function
This diagram shows the characteristic of the Peak Limiter. The bold line represents the output signal, while the
input signal is shown by the dashed line above it. The areas between the curves represent the degree of
signal attenuation. With extremely short release times, the Peak Limiter responds like a clipper and restricts
the gain to the Threshold. Select a longer release time for a more natural and homogeneous limiting character-
istic.
The available ULTRA-DYNE PRO Peak Limiter parameters are the Threshold, to be found in the <PROCESS>
menu, and the release time in the <IN/OUT> menu of setup level 2. The following definitions describe the
parameters in greater detail:

This is the value at which the Peak Limiter begins to attenuate the signal.
