4.5 Testing the Power Relay
The power relay is located on the outer electrical panel. See Section 4.1.
Visually inspect the power relay for black scorch marks, particularly near the motor
wires at contacts "1" and "2." If there are any such marks, replace the power relay.
The lift must be plugged in and turned on to perform the following tests.
Before testing the power relay, the following two conditions must be met:
1. The power relay must be receiving power. To verify this, check for a 120 VAC drop
across the "1" and "2" contacts on the power relay.
2. The relay module must be receiving power (see Section 4.3). If it is not, take the
steps listed in Section 4.3 to restore power.
To test the power relay, connect a jumper from the "L+" contact on the relay module to
the "3" contact on the power relay. If this causes the lift car to rise, then the power relay
is functional. If it does not, then measure the voltage drop across contacts "1" and "2"
on the power relay while jumping from the "L+" contact on the relay module to the "3"
contact on the power relay. If the voltage drop does not go to approximately 0 VAC,
then the power relay is not functioning correctly and needs to be replaced.
To replace the power relay, electrically isolate the lift according to the procedures in
Section 3.2. Then remove the transparent plastic cover from the relay and disconnect
the four (4) wires from the relay, labeling each wire according to its terminal number for
reinstallation later. Finally, remove the two (2) mounting screws that secure the relay to
the electrical panel. When reinstalling the power relay, be sure to attach the wires to
the terminals from which they were removed, and reattach the transparent plastic cover
to the relay.
