Glossary
Coarse filter (strainer)
is mounted behind the thru-hull fitting beneath waterline and protects
the feed pump from gross contamination.
Feed pump
provides for a good inlet to the high-pressure pump and extends by the inlet
pressure the lifetime of the sediment filters.
Sediment filters
are mounted in front of the high-pressure pump and prevent the entry of
smallest particles in the high-pressure pump and membranes.
Unfiltered water in the inlet hinders the valves of the high-pressure pump from functioning
correctly and accelerates a blocking of the downstream membranes.
The filter fineness is 5 micron. For systems with a high feed flow, there is an additional
upstream 20 micron filter to prevent early contamination.
Pressure gauge inlet pressure seawater inflow
is mounted at the outlet of the sediment
filters und indicates the pressure between sediment filter and high-pressure pump
.
If the pressure indicates toward 0 bar, the pre filters have to be cleaned or exchanged.
Pressure control valve with pressure gauge
serves for adjustment and control of the
required working pressure. Starting and stop of the plant generally only with the valve open
.
Membranes
are necessary for process of the reverse osmosis (RO).
The lifetime depends on the maintenance and is difficult to predetermine.
Membranes don’t break down abruptly (except for the case of an entry of chlorine, oil,
chemicals), but over a long period.
Coarse filter (fresh water flushing)
is mounted on the pressure water system of the ship
and prevents the entry of chlorine (which might be in the fresh water tank) in the membranes
of the desalination plant.
