A.10.1. Handpieces: Practical Considerations of Operation and
Technique
•
The treatment consists of the combined use of the two handpieces - Unipolar
and Bipolar (see Figure A-1).
•
The radiofrequency (RF) energy is emitted only when the handpiece tip comes
in contact with the skin.
•
The handpiece tip is kept cooled by integrated thermoelectric cooling (
TEC
)
technology.
•
The cooling system reaches the target temperature within two minutes after the
device is turned on; the practitioner should check that the tip is cold before
commencing treatment.
•
The goal is to raise and maintain the skin temperature on the target tissue in the
maximal therapeutic temperature range of 106-109.5°F (41-43°C).
•
The treatment includes two distinct phases: pre-therapeutic and therapeutic; the
goal of the pre-therapeutic phase is to raise the basal (ambient) skin temperature
from ~88-89.5°F (~31-32°C) to 102-104°F) 39-40°C within 60 seconds (max).

•
The goal of the therapeutic phase (Phase II) is to increase and maintain the
temperature of 106-109.5°F (41-43°C), without causing any patient discomfort.
•
After each pass, the practitioner shall check the skin temperature by using the
infrared thermometer provided with the system.
•
Treatment technique: the tip of the selected handpiece must be in complete
contact with the skin and slightly pressed towards the skin.
