Chapter 3: Access Point Confi guration
Introduction
The 3e–525A–3 comes with the capability to be confi gured as an
access point. As it incorporates two separate 802.11 wireless cards, one
for confi guring a local WLAN and one for use in bridging, it can also be
confi gured for bridging, either with access point or gateway confi guration
on the WLAN side. Confi guration as a gateway is discussed in Chapter 4
and confi guration for bridging is discussed in Chapter 5.
If confi gured as an access point, it can be further confi gured for use in
FIPS 140-2 secure mode. In this example of confi guration, we have chosen
to present all the screens in the FIPS 140-2 mode. There are a few differ-
ences in non-FIPS mode which are described in the Navigation chart on
page 8.
Preliminary Confi guration Steps
For preliminary installation the 3e–525A–3 network administrator
may need the following in for ma tion:
• IP address – a list of IP addresses available on the organization's
LAN that are available to be used for as signment to the AP(s)
• Subnet Mask for the LAN
• Default IP address of the 3e–525A–3
• DNS IP address
• SSID – an ID number/letter string that you want to use in the con-
fi g u ra tion process to identify all mem bers of the wireless LAN.
• The MAC addresses of all the wire less cards that will be used to
access the 3e–525A–3 network of access points (if MAC address
fi ltering is to be enabled)
• The appropriate encryption key for Static 3DES or Static AES if
state-of-the art key management will be used. Alternately, the ap-
propriate WEP key.
