Dictionary Entries
The dictionary entries contain various elements. These
examples are taken from the AHD College and English to
Spanish dictionaries.
Not all elements are seen in every dictionary.
1. Headword
The selected word or derivative of the selected word.
Includes headwords made up of more than one word.
The headword ‘hello’
The word ‘ate’ is a derivative of the headword ‘eat’
The compound headword 'cross-country skiing'
2. Homonyms
Two or more words which are spelled the same but
have different meanings.
The Alternative Entries list for the homonym ‘desert’
