should only be used for light work of short duration.

Use non-conductive platforms for unavoidable live

electrical work. Do not use the platform outside in

adverse weather conditions, such as strong wind.

Take precautions against children playing on the

platform. Face the platform when ascending and

descending. Keep a secure grip on the platform

when ascending and descending. Do not use the

platform as a bridge. Do not spend long periods

on a platform without regular breaks (tiredness is

a risk). Equipment carried while using the platform

should be light and easy to handle. Avoid work that

imposes a sideways load on standing platforms,

such as side-on drilling through solid materials

(e.g. brick or concrete). Maintain a handhold whilst

working from a platform or take additional safety

precautions if you cannot. Never open or use the

platform upside down. The base should always

sit firmly on the ground. Do not leave an opened

platform unattended. Do not place tools or other

objects on the rungs and do not hang anything on

the platform. Climb and descend with deliberate

movements. Please put the hands around the stile

when bringing the platform from opened to storage

position. Do not step off the side of the platform.

Take care when closing the platform to not catch

fingers, clothing or hair in the mechanism.

REPAIR, MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE.

Repairs and maintenance shall be carried out

by a competent person and be in accordance

producer’s instructions. Platforms should be stored

in accordance with the producer’s instructions.

Fully collapse the platform and secure before

storage or handling. Clean the platform with a

suitable proprietary household cleaner and a soft

dry cloth. Dry all parts thoroughly before storing

the platform. Store the platform indoors in a dry

environment. Do not rest other objects on the

platform. Store the platform the correct way up; the

base should always sit on the ground.

REASONS FOR ACCIDENTS.

The following list of hazards and examples

of their causes, which is not exhaustive, are

common reasons for accidents encountered when

using platforms and are the basis on which the

information in this standard has been developed:.

LOSS OF STABILITY

. Incorrect positioning of the

platform  (such  as  not  fully  opening  a  platform).

Condition of the platform (such as missing anti-

slip  feet).  Ground  conditions  (such  as  unstable

soft ground, sloping ground, slippery surfaces or

contaminated  solid  surfaces).  Adverse  weather

conditions  (such  as  windy  condotions).  Collision

with the platform (such as with vehicle or door).

Incorrect choice of platform (such as too short,

unsuitable task).

FROM HANDLING

. Transferring

the platform to the work position. Opening and

closing the platform. Carrying items up the platform.

SLIP TRIP AND FALL OF USER

. Inappropriate

footwear. Contaminated rungs or steps. Unsafe

user practices (such as climbing 2 rungs at time,

sliding down stiles).

STRUCTURAL FAILURE OF

PLATFORM

. Condition of the platform (such as

damaged stiles, wear). Overloading the platform.

ELECTRICAL HAZARDS

. Unavoidable live

working (e. g. fault finding). Positioning platforms

too close to live electrical equipment (such as

overhead  power  lines).  Platforms  damaging

electrical equipment (such as covers or protective

insulation). Incorrect selection of type of platform

for electrical work.

PICTOGRAMS.

The square pictograms illustrate a positive action

to be followed and have a green border, and the

round pictograms illustrate a prohibited action

and have a red border. Read the instructions

(1).  Maximum  number  of  user  on  platform  (2).

Maximum load (3). Lubricate hinges (4). Inspect

platform  feet  (5).  Visual  check  before  use  (6).

Ensure opening restraint devices are engaged (7).
