Shifting and Speed Control
The control lever operates both the drive gear shifting
and the engine throttle control. From the neutral posi-
tion, the first step of the lever movement controls the
shifting. There is a small detent at the end of this step.
The next part of the lever movement controls the throt-
tle and engine speed .
WARNING!
Possible loss of boat control. Be aware of changes in
the way the control mechanism operates. Hard shift-
ing, rough lever action, or other abnormal conditions
indicate a problem with the shift/throttle system. Cor-
rect the problem before using the boat. Continued
operation could result in loss of shift and throttle con-
trol.
Verify proper functionality of all control and engine sys-
tems before leaving the dock.
DANGER!
A rotating propeller can cause serious injury. Make
sure no one is in the water near the boat before shifting
the drive in to gear.
1 The control lever must be in the neutral position
N
to start the engine.
2 To go forward: Move the control lever forward from
neutral to the forward gear engagement detent
position
F
. Throttle movement begins after forward
gear engagement. Move the control lever forward
to increase speed.
3 To go in reverse: Move the control lever back from
neutral to reverse gear engagement detent position
R
. Throttle movement begins after reverse gear
engagement. Move the control lever back to
increase speed. Avoid high speed in reverse gear.
4 To go from forward to reverse, or reverse to for-
ward, always pause at neutral
N
and allow engine
speed to return to idle.
NOTICE!
Shifting directly between forward and
reverse may damage the drive or the engine (water
ingestion). The damage could be severe.
NOTICE!
Do not shift gears if engine speed is above
800 RPM. High RPM shifting may damage the drive.
If your boat is equipped with a non-Volvo Penta remote
control system, ask your dealer how to properly oper-
ate it.
