Marking the Start of a Dive using the Bren Bezel
Please note if you are planning to use your Vertex
watch as a means of timing your dives, you should
regularly have the water resistance checked and hold a
certification as an open water diver.
The rotating bezel
is used to time dives and takes its design inspiration
from the rear sight adjuster of a Bren Gun, the same
model used by British Military in World War 2. To mark
the start of a dive, align the triangle on the rotating
bezel with the minute hand by turning the external
rotating bezel. The chosen point in time, perhaps when
entering the water at the start of a dive, can be fixed
this way. The rotating bezel then allows you to read
off the elapsed time since completing the previous
step, perhaps the duration of the dive. It is for safety
reasons that the internal rotating bezel may only be
rotated in an anticlockwise direction. The rotating bezel
is noted audibly and visibly in one-minute steps and is
also decipherable in the dark thanks to its luminescent
markings.
Information about Magnetic Fields
In recent years the occurrence of strong magnets made
from rare-earth alloys (for example neodymium, iron,
and boron) found in things such as electric motors for
cordless tools, hard disk drives, magnetic hold-downs,
mobile phone cases and jewellery clasps, amongst
many others, means that mechanical watches are
more and more likely to be exposed to such magnets
and thus become magnetized. Although the testing
undertaken by the ISO certification ensures your watch
is resistant to such pressures, overexposure may result
in the need to engage a specialist to begin the process
of demagnetization. For these reasons we recommend
that you keep your watch away from such magnets.
Even watches with a soft-iron case - which provide a
higher standard of protection against magnetic fields,
far exceeding the requirements of DIN standard 8309
– can still be effected by very close proximity to strong
magnets and so we recommend that watches fitted
with soft-iron inner cases still be kept away from direct
