1. Introduction
The German standard methods for the examination of water, waste water and sludge require the use of overhead mixing for
the determination of the leachability by water of sludge, sediments and solid wastes (DIN 38414, October 1984, Group S,
Sections 4). The equipment can be used in all the applications where rotating, shaking and mixing are required.
Summary of the DIN 38414
-
Equipment and products
Overhead mixer, glass or plastic bottles 2000 ml, set for membrane filtration, conductimeter, pH-meter and distilled water.
100 g of solid material (dry weight) with dimensions less than 10 mm are introduced with 1 l of distilled water into 2 l glass or
plastic vessels. The vessels are overturned at low speed 5-6 rpm. at room temperature during 24 hours. The eluate after
membrane filtration (0.45 mm) is used for the determination of soluble pollutants.
2. Assembly and installation
Check the integrity of the unit after unpacking. The box includes:
•
ROTAX
•
Power supply cable
•
Instruction manual
2.1 Electrical connection
Before connecting the instrument to the power supply, make sure that the values on the rating plate correspond to those of
the power supply. Connect the unit to the power supply using the transformer supplied.
Ensure that the socket and the relative cut-off device conform to current safety norms and easy to reach.
2.2 Start-up
The bottles are placed first on one side platform and fixed by pushing the spring knob and fixing it by the screw clamp.
The instrument is then rotated 180° by turning on the main switch and the second group of bottles can be placed into
position and fixed. To increase the life span of the motor always distribute the weight of the bottles evenly.
2.3 Arm replacement
The use with 1 l bottles is possible by the substitution of the arm holding bottles 220-280 mm high (2 l) with the
complementary A00001023. The substitution is performed unscrewing the four screws fixing the normally mounted arm and
replacing it with the new arm fixed by the same four screws but at the lower row. Repeat the substitution on the opposite
side in order to maintain equilibrated the rotating masses.
2.4 Safety devices and warning signals
The instrument is equipped with a safety device that cuts-off the power supply to the motor when the rotating part
encounters and obstacle; a warning message “AL” appears on the display. To return to normal running mode turn the
instrument off and remove the obstacle before turning it on again. Should a warning message appear on the display when
no obstacles are present, check that the weight of the bottles is evenly distributed between the two brackets. Always make
sure that the mains switch is turned to “0” when loading and unloading bottles.
3. Operating controls
The equipment can hold up to six 2 l glass or plastic vessels, 220-280 mm high or with an optional clamp up to 8 vessels
200-270 mm high. The motor is directly connected to the rotating shaft by a gear speed reducer. The speed of rotation
controlled by the electronic card and shown on the display can be varied continuously from 2 to 30 rpm using
and
.
4. Maintenance
No routine or extraordinary maintenance is necessary apart from periodically cleaning the unit as described in this manual.
In compliance with the product guarantee law, repairs to our units must be carried out in our factory, unless previously
agreed otherwise with local distributors. The instrument must be transported in its original packaging and any indications
present on the original packaging must be followed (e.g. palletized).
It is the responsibility of the user, to properly decontaminate the unit in case of hazardous substances remaining on the
surface or interior of the device. If in doubt about the compatibility of a cleaning or decontamination product, contact the
manufacturer or distributor.
4.1 Cleaning
Disconnect the unit from the power supply and use a cloth dampened with an non-inflammable non-aggressive detergent.
