Degree of protection IP
The degree of protection of electrical machines is defined in accordance with IEC/EN 60034-5. Said standard specifies the
degree of protection of each machine using an ‘IP’ code, which comprises two digits:
- First digit: Indicates the degree of protection for contact and solid bodies.
- Second digit: Indicates the degree of protection for water.
The table below shows the meaning of each digit:

For example, a machine defined as IP54 indicates complete protection against contact and water spraying from any direction.
