Heat Pump Pre-Installation Checklist
Where applicable, the following should be considered before commencing with the installation of
the heat pump:
Description
Checked
Heat pump is correctly sized
Full heat loss and design calculations to BS 12831.
Anti-Freeze Protection – Glycol
Without adequate glycol protection down to -15°C the guarantee of the heat pump
will be invalidated. All glycol should pre-mixed in an appropriate container as per
manufacturers’ instructions and pumped into the system. Hand pumps are not
suitable. Glycol recommendations are; Fernox HP5c, Sentinel R700 and R600.
Glycol Discharge Vessel
Required to collect fluid discharged via a PRV. Article Number: 0020145563
Y-Strainer / Dirt Filter
Recommended to be fitted on the return to the heat pump. The use of a magnetic
filter is also recommended.
DHW Cylinder with Adequate Coil Rating
When non-Vaillant heat pump DHW cylinders are used, it is recommended using
cylinders with coil rating of minimum 4kW per 1m

.
Correctly sized heat emitters for MCS SCoP rating:
Heat emitters may need over sizing depending on the flow temperature from the
heat pump. Underfloor heating will need designing with pipe centres correlating to
the flow temperature.
Vaillant Controls
Correct controls are chosen for the operation of heating zones and DHW: See
appropriate schematic.

Party Controls
When utilising input from 3rd party controllers, Vaillant controls will require a ‘NC’
operation for the input terminals; the heat pump will start running when there is an
open circuit across the terminal. Where it is not possible for a 3rd party controller to
provide this, a relay can be used; most recognisable ones being ‘230V 8 pin Relay’
(DPDT).
Fill and isolation points for all circuits are considered.
Hybrid Systems
Relevant heat and electrical meters are considered when claiming RHI.
