Getting started
a) Inserting/changing the battery
•
Insert the battery before using the metal detector for the first time. Change the battery when
the battery level indicator (a) remains only one bar or blinks.
• Remove the battery compartment cover (9) on the back of the metal detector.
• Insert a 9 V (type 6LR61) battery (not included) into the battery compartment. Ensure that
you observe the plus/+ and minus/- polarity indicators, and ensure that the positive charge
of the battery is inserted into the positive charge of the compartment. The strap should be
placed under the battery and then looped over the top to allow to remove the battery easily
at a later date.
• Replace the battery compartment cover.
b) Turning the metal detector on and off
• Before turning on the metal detector, check that the sensor area (8) is dry. If necessary, wipe
the sensor dry using a lint-free cloth.
• If the metal detector has been subjected to an extreme change in temperature, allow it to
reach room temperature before turning it on.
• Ensure that the metal detector is not in direct sunlight and is protected against moisture.
• Remove all objects in the vicinity of the metal detector. This includes any metallic objects and
jewellery worn by the user (e.g. wristwatches, rings, necklaces).
• The metal detector should be held from the bottom. Avoid grasping or covering the sensor
by hand.
• Press the power on/off button (6) once to turn on the metal detector.
• Once switched on, the metal detector’s default setting is the metal detection mode. The metal
detection mode icon (e) appears on the LC display. Before using the metal detector, test that
the metal detection feature is working properly. If there are no metal objects, magnetic fields
or other objects made of detectable materials within range of the sensor, the metal detector
beeps once and the LED indicator (1) lights up green.
• If the sensor detects a metal object, the LED indicator lights up red and the product emits a
long beep. If however, the LED indicator flashes and beeps continuously, the metal detector
needs to be calibrated.
• To turn off the metal detector, press the power on/off button once.
• If no buttons are pressed and no objects are detected for 5 minutes, the metal detector turns
off automatically to conserve battery power.
If you use or operate a microwave or other transmitter is near the metal detector, it
will affect the detection result.
c) Calibrating the metal detector
If the LED indicator flashes and beeps continuously, the metal detector needs to be calibrated,
using the following steps:
• Remove all objects in the vicinity of the metal detector. This includes any metallic objects and
jewellery worn by the user (e.g. wristwatches, rings, necklaces).
• Press the power on/off button once to turn on the metal detector.
• Place the metal detector in front of you, up in the air, and away from any metal, wooden
objects, and magnetic fields within walls, ceilings and floors.
• Press and hold down the metal detection button (3) until the metal detector stops beeping
and the LED indicator lights up green.
• This indicates that the metal detector was successfully calibrated.
Operation
Before using the metal detector, select the appropriate mode for the material that you want to
scan.
a) Detecting metal objects and magnetic fields
• To detect metals, press the power on/off button (6) to turn on the metal detector, then press
the metal detection button (3). The metal detection mode icon (e) appears on the LC display.
•
To detect magnetic fields, the magnetic metal icon
(c) will appear in the LC display. If a metal
object is detected, but there is no magnetic field, the icon appears in the LC display with an
X.
The metal detector will also beep continuously, with or without a magnetic field.
• Place the metal detector as close as possible to the surface of the object and move the metal
detector sideways, slowly along the surface.
• The signal strength indicator (d) increases when the sensor area (8) moves closer to a
detected object and decreases when it moves away from a detected object. The measured
signal strength ranges from 0 to 100 and reaches the maximum of 100 when the sensor is
placed directly above the detected object.
• The signal strength indicator lights up red, and the metal detector generates a continuous
beep, when an object is detected directly underneath the sensor area. The signal strength
indicator lights up yellow when the signal is weaker indicating an object is nearby, and beeps
continuously. Finally the signal strength indicator lights up green when no object is detected
and will no longer beep.
•
When the metal detector is near a magnetic field, the magnetic metal icon
(c) will appear
in the LC display, and the metal detector will beep continuously. The magnetic metal icon
toggles when a magnetic field is or isn’t present. An
X
indicates no magnetic field is present.
The location and position of the metal object may affect the accuracy of the depth
reading.
For best results, the object should be parallel to the surface.
The depth reading should only be treated as an approximate measurement.
This device is not suitable for locating objects in walls or ceilings that are covered
with metallic fibres.
The metal detector cannot detect plastic water pipes.
Wires in PVC or metal conduit are detected as metal objects.
The maximum detection depth depends on the material and the size of the object.
Larger objects can be detected at greater depths than smaller objects.
b) Detecting wooden objects
• To detect wood materials, press the power on/off button (6) to turn on the metal detector, then
press the wood detection button (4). The wood detection mode icon (j) and the red lightning
icon appear on the LC display. The metal detector beeps continuously. In the wood detection
mode, live wires can also be detected. When live wires are detected, the red lightning icon
goes solid from flashing. Wood and live wires cannot be detected simultaneously.
•
Place the metal detector on a flat surface, keep it still, and wait for the instrument to
automatically be calibrated. When this process has been completed, the LED indicator lights
up green, and the metal detector is ready to detect wood objects.
• Place the metal detector onto the surface that you want to scan for wood objects (e.g. a wall,
floor or ceiling).
• The signal strength indicator increases when the sensor area moves closer to a detected
object and decreases when it moves away from a detected object. The measured signal
strength ranges from 0 to 100 and reaches the maximum of 100 when the sensor is placed
directly above the detected object.
• The signal strength indicator lights up red, and the metal detector generates a continuous
beep, when an object is detected directly underneath the sensor area. The signal strength
indicator lights up yellow when the signal is weaker indicating an object is nearby. Finally the
signal strength indicator lights up green when no object is detected and will no longer beep.
This device is not suitable for use on walls or ceilings insulated with metal fibres or
thick plaster.
Always take several measurements to double check the location of the object.
It is possible that the detected object may be an electrical wire, pipe or other
installation. Always exercise caution when drilling, sawing or hammering nails to
ensure that you do not touch a pipe or electrical wire. To reduce the risk of coming
into contact with wires or pipes, scan the surface in both the metal detection mode
and the live wire detection mode.
To prevent interference and ensure accurate results, keep your other hand away
from the metal detector during use.
