I/O Blade
The I/O Blade is designed to carry three high-performance PCI-Express graphics
cards, in addition to providing power, cooling, management, and other vital func-
tions.
Three 8-lane PCI-Express riser cards are used to accommodate the three high-power
(200W maximum), high-performance graphics cards. Based on the PCI-Express 1.0a
specification, the maximum amount of current that each PCI-Express socket draws
is listed in
on page 1-9, which also lists the total maximum current draw at
+3.3V.
In addition, each plug-in graphics card re12V through a supplemental PCI-
Express power connector (6 pins + 8 pins) implemented on the riser card.
The maximum power from each socket is 60W according to the PCI-Express specifi-
cation (calculated at 62.7W). The remaining power (150 – 60 = 90W) comes from
the supplemental connectors (the 90 W results from 7.5A at 12V). The graphics card
has 6 pins to carry this current.
