Roland Sound Canvas
A GM/GS module used by many musicians who produce MIDI music for games. Also widespread in amateur musician circles.
ROM
Read Only Memory. Memory medium which only enables information to be read; it does not enable information to be written.
Sampling
The process of converting analog information into digital information. In general, this term refers to audio information which
is digitised by the sampling procedure and which can then be edited in the computer.
Sampler Rate
The scanning frequency which is used for recording the analog signal and which is converted into a digital value. Higher
frequences mean that the result of subsequent digital-analog convertion reproduces the original signal better.
SB Pro
Soundblaster Pro. A model in the Creative Labs Soundblaster series with digital recording and playback in 8-bit stereo and
OPL3 FM synthesis for music reproduction.
Screen Print
Printout of the contents of the screen using the print key on the computer keyboard.
SCSI
Small Computer System Interface. Internal and external bus system for transferring data between the PC and peripheral devices
such as hard disks and removible disks, CD-ROM drives, scanners, etc.
Sequencer Software
Software which enables MIDI information to be recorded, edited and played back. In this way, pieces of music can be composed
with the computer.
SFX Kit
A drumkit program which presents various effects sounds spread over the keyboard.
Signal-to-Noise Ratio
The ratio between the useful signal and interference signal with audio devices. The higher the value (expressed in dB), the
lower is the basic noise of the device.
Slots
Designed for holding expansion cards in the PC. The slots differ depending on the particular bus system.
Soundblaster
One of the first soundcards of Creative Labs which became the first de facto standard for soundcards due to their wide
distribution. Accordingly, almost all game manufacturers still support the Soundblaster standard.
Soundblaster Pro
A module in the Creative Labs Soundblaster series with digital recording and reproduction in 8-bit stereo and OPL3 FM synthesis
for music reproduction.
Start Files
Files which are automatically run by the operating system when the computer is booted and which configure and initialise the
computer system. These are the CONFIG.SYS and the AUTOEXEC.BAT files for DOS, and the SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI files for
Windows 3.1 and 3.11. For Windows 95, these files are the registration database with the files SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT.
Synthesizer
Electronic musical instrument which generates sounds with the aid of analog and digital synthesis.
TerraTec Electronic GmbH
German manufacturer of professional multimedia products based in Nettetal. TerraTec was one of the main companies involved
in establishing Wavetable technology on soundcards.
Windows 95
Microsoft 32-bit operating system which is no longer based on the DOS operating system (unlike its predecessors).
WSS
Windows Sound System. A package consisting of a soundcard and various application programs which used to be made by
Microsoft. The 16-bit soundcard used special resources which have now become standard primarily under Windows. Some
games now also use the MSS for sound output.
Y-Adapter
A cable with three connections which connects the joystick port to two joysticks and which thus enables two players to operate
games.
