Boom Extension Cylinder
The boom extension cylinder is located inside the
boom assembly and incorporates cables and
pulleys that are responsible for extending the
number 3 boom tube. The primary boom extension
cylinder is equipped with counterbalance valves to
prevent movement in the event of a hydraulic line
failure.
How to Remove the Boom
Extension Cylinder
Bodily injury hazard. This
procedure requires specific repair
skills, lifting equipment and a
suitable workshop. Attempting
this procedure without these skills
and tools could result in death or
serious injury and significant
component damage. Dealer
service is strongly recommended.
Note: When removing a hose assembly or fitting,
the O-ring (if equipped) on the fitting and/or hose
end must be replaced. All connections must be
torqued to specification during installation. Refer to
Specifications, Hydraulic Hose and Fitting Torque
Specifications.
Note: Perform this procedure with the boom fully
retracted.
1 Raise the boom to a horizontal position.
2 Remove the boom end cover retaining
fasteners and remove the cover.
3 Remove the access covers from both sides of
the boom at the pivot end.
4 Fully loosen the lock nuts on the extend
cables. Do not remove the nuts.

5 Loosen the retract cable nut at the platform
end of the boom. Pull the cable rod from the
support and let it hang down.
6 Remove the cable guard fasteners and
remove the cable guard.
7 Locate the retaining plates that secure the
retract cables to the inside of the number 3
boom tube.
8 Remove the cable retaining plates and pull the
retract cables off of the pulleys. Lay the cables
flat and out of the way.
