When soldering on c irc u it boards or small insulated
wires, use only a 15-watt, pencil-type soldering iron. A
higher wattage soldering iron can cause etched c irc u it
conductors to separate from the board base material and
m elt the insulation on small wires. Always keep the
soldering-iron tip properly tinned to ensure best heat trans
fer from the iron tip to the solder jo in t. To p rotect heat-
sensitive components, either hold the com ponent lead w ith
long-nose pliers or place a heat block between the com
ponent body and the solder jo in t. A p p ly only enough
solder to make a firm jo in t. A fte r soldering, clean the area
around the solder connection w ith an approved flu x -
removing solvent (such as isopropyl alcohol) and allow it to
air dry.
A tte m p ts to unsolder, remove, and resolder leads
fro m the com ponent side o f a c irc u it board m ay
cause damage to the reverse side o f the c irc u it board.
The fo llo w in g techniques should be used to replace a
com ponent on any o f the c irc u it boards:
1. Touch the vacuum desoldering to o l to the lead at
the solder connection. Never place the iron d ire ctly on the
board; doing this may damage the board.
