MASTER CYLINDER
Add Fluid
1: Thoroughly clean the area around the master cylinder cap and remove
the cap.
2:
Add brake fluid from a new sealed container to the master cylinder until
it is within 1/8 inch from the top of the reservoir inside the casting.
Replace
1: Raise the vehicle and support with jack stands.
2: Place a drain pan under the master cylinder.
3: Disconnect the brake line(s) to the master cylinder and pump out the
fluid in the master cylinder by pressing the pedal several times.
4: Remove the master cylinder bolts and remove the master cylinder from
the vehicle.
5: Install in reverse order.
Adjust
The master cylinder push rod should NOT be in contact with the
bottom of the plunger when the brake is released. If allowed to be in
contact with the plunger may result in dragging brakes.
1: Loosen the push rod jam nut.
2: Adjust the master cylinder push rod so that it is approximately
1/8 inch away from the master cylinder plunger when the
brake pedal is up.
3: While holding the push rod so that it cannot turn, tighten the
jam nut.
Repair
Note: Hydraulic brake system components must be kept clean.
Make sure your work area is free from dirt and debris and
will contain any brake fluid spills.
1: Remove the master cylinder from the vehicle. See Replace
the Master Cylinder section .
2:
Drain all fluid from the master cylinder and discard.
3: Remove the rubber boot.
4: Press the plunger and remove the plunger spring clip retainer.
5: Pull the plunger and all seals out of the master cylinder bore.
6: Thoroughly clean, inspect and replace parts as required.
7: If any damage is found in the bore of the master cylinder then it must be replaced.
8:
Lubricate all parts with clean brake fluid from a sealed container.
9: Reassemble in reverse order.
10:
If the master cylinder is not to be immediately installed onto a vehicle, plug the brake line fitting hole to
prevent any contaminates from entering the master cylinder.
