DIFFERENTIAL GEAR
The differential gear assembly cannot be rebuilt. If it is
faulty it must be replaced as an assembly.
The differential assembly is a balanced unit. Do not drop
the assembly or strike it with a hammer.
Remove
1: Remove the transaxle assembly from the vehicle.
2: Remove the left side brake/gear assembly.
3: Remove the screws holding the left side casting
to the motor and remove the casting.
4: Remove the gasket and differential assembly.
Install
Reinstall in reverse order. Refer to appropriate section
for reassembly procedures.
Inspection
Any one or more of the following are indications of a
faulty differential:
•
Transmission noise only when turning could be an
indication of faulty differential.
•
Differential gears should rotate freely.
•
Unusual or excessive wear on the splined surfaces
where the shafts are coupled to the differential.
•
Surface burns on the gears or housing.
SPEED ENCODER
Testing
The speed encoder is installed in the transaxle housing
and provides a signals to the controller indicating the
speed of the vehicle and direction of travel. The encoder
is an active device and must be connected to a power
source to operate. There are no static tests.
The encoder has two independent channels. The outputs
of the encoder are square waves can be seen with an
oscilloscope.
When replacing the encoder, Use thread locking
compound 94-430-07 and tighten the mounting bolt per
torque listed in the Hardware Torque table at the end of
this section.
To test the encoder,
1: Disconnect the encoder from the chassis
harness.
2: Connect a 5 to 24 volt regulated power supply to
pins #1(+) and #4(-).
3: Connect the positive lead of an analog volt meter
to pin #1.
4: Connect the negative lead to pin #3 (channel B)
and slowly push the vehicle to rotate the sensor
wheel.
5: As the sensor wheel rotates, the voltage should
pulsate from 0 to about 5 volts.
6: Repeat the test on pin #2 (channel A).
Sensor Wheel, Remove
1: Remove the transaxle assembly from the vehicle.
2: Remove the right side brake/gear assembly.
3: Remove the screws holding the right side casting
to the motor and remove the casting.
4: Remove the set screw and pull the sensor wheel
off of the shaft with a gear puller.
Sensor Wheel, Install
Reinstall in reverse order. Refer to appropriate section
for reassembly procedures.
