6.4. SPLITTING

Splitting is carried out by means of a splitting cylinder that pushes the log towards the splitting
wedge. The splitting speed depends on the wood resistance and changes during splitting. Since the
splitting speed is inversely proportional to the splitting force, the splitting cylinder provides a higher
splitting force at a lower speed and a lower splitting force at a higher splitting speed. The splitting
cylinder automatically selects the required speed or splitting force that provides a higher energy
efficiency.

Engage the splitting cylinder by briefly pushing the control handle forward. Do not hold the handle
in this position! The cylinder will automatically move in both directions (forward and backward). The
adjustable switch located under the machine cover returns the cylinder.

Before splitting always check the correct position of the log inside the splitting chute!

The splitting cylinder can be returned at any time by pushing the red button on the main control
handle, by lifting the protective cover or by pushing the safety STOP switch.

The cut piece of wood may fall into the splitting chute diagonally. If this happens, open the cover and
reposition the piece of wood prior to splitting. Problems may also be caused by wood pieces that
were cut sideways (particularly the last piece). These pieces can lift up during splitting and damage
the machine.

6.4.1. ADJUSTING THE HEIGHT OF THE SPLITTING WEDGE AND REPLACING

THE SPLITTING WEDGE (RCA 480 JOY)

Lift or lower the splitting wedge by pressing the yellow buttons
on the main control handle. By doing so you place the splitting
wedge to the center of the log and ensure the optimum size of
the firewood.

It is best to lift or lower the splitting wedge when the splitting
chute is empty or when the splitting cylinder starts to move.

The lifting mechanism of the splitting wedge also allows gradual
movement of the splitting wedge up/down during splitting
operation. If the wood gets stuck under the splitting wedge,
remove the wood to prevent damage to the lifting mechanism.

To replace the splitting wedge:

•  Lower the splitting wedge to the bottom position to release the lifting mechanism;
•  Pull out the splitting wedge and replace it with a new one;
•  Then slightly lift the mechanism to fasten the splitting wedge in the operating position.

For RCA 480 JOY PLUS see: RCA 480 JOY PLUS attachment to RCA 480 JOY operating instructions.
