Narrowband
In data transmssion, the wider the band, the more data it is possible to transmit in
a given time span. A cable, DSL and ADSL connection to the network provide
broadband for data transmission. A dialup or ISDN connection typically provide
a narrow bandwidth for data transmission.
Off-hook
Lifting the telephone handset from its cradle. Off-hook provides the dial tone,
which then enables you to dial numbers or activate features.
On-hook
Replacing (hanging up) the telephone handset on its cradle.
Operator/Attendant
The operator is responsible for answering incoming calls and connecting them to
their required destination. The attendant also attends to trunk, system and station
feature controls.
Outside Line Access
Code
A series of digits which must be keyed in order to gain access to a trunk or trunk
group.
Port
Provides access to a device, station or trunk from within the system.
PSTN
Public Switch Telephone Network. The traditional land-line phone network.
Recall-Automatic
The call that you have transferred to another extension that is busy or that does
not answer or that you have put on ‘hold’, which has returned to you after a
predetermined time-out period.
RTP
Real-time Transport Protocol. A protocol for delivering the media portion of a
data transmission over an IP network.
“SRTP”
(see below) is another media
protocol.
