Recorder Placement: 
 

Dictation: 

hold the recorder about 4 inches from your mouth. Do not talk directly  

 

 

into the microphone. Hold it in such a manner that the sound passes by 

 

 

the microphone not directly into it. Set the microphone sensitivity on Low. 

 
 

Conference Recording: 

place the unit on a book, not directly on the surface of 

 

 

the table or the desk. This will eliminate or minimize sound transfer from  

 

 

the hard surface of the table created by any hand movements. Set the 

 

 

the recorder in the High microphone sensitivity mode.  

 
 

Lecture Recording: 

place the unit on a book, not directly on the surface of 

 

 

the table or the desk. This will eliminate or minimize sound transfer from  

 

 

the hard surface of the table created by any hand movements. Set the 

 

 

the recorder in the High microphone sensitivity mode and activate the 

 

 

directional mic mode if available on your recorder. Face the microphone 

 

 

in the direction of the person speaking.

 

 
Rec / Pause: 

easy to use operation for dictating found on the ICD-ST10 and the 

ICD-MS515. Press the “Dictate” button to start  recording and then press 
the “Dictate” button to pause and gather your thoughts. To continue 
recording press the “Dictate” button again. Note that each time you press 
the button you hear a beep tone to confirm that you have pressed the 
button. In addition, when you are in Pause, the LCD screen shows a 
flashing “PAUSE” and the red operation light also flashes. When you 
continue recording the red LED will stop flashing. 

 
 

 

Note: the “beep” sound will not be recorded. 

 
Rec / Stop: 

starts recording when you press the “Dictate” button and stops 

 

 

recording when you press the “Dictate” Button again. This also 

 

 

ends the dictation. When you press the “Dictate” button again it 

 

 

creates a new dictation. 

 
Overwrite Function: 

available on the ICD-MS515, ICD-ST10 and the ICD-P17 

 

 

enables the user to correct their dictation by listening through the 

 

 

last correct word of their existing dictation and pressing the Rec 

 

 

button. All the dictation in the current recording after the user 

 

 

presses the Rec button will be erased and replaced by the new 

 

 

dictation. For example: dictation “1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10” 

 

 

In playback press the “Rec” button after hearing the “5” in playback and 

 

 

dictate “ A B” and then stop the recording. In playback you will hear 

 

 

“1 2 3 4 5 A B”. Even though the new dictation “A B” is shorter in  

 

 

recording time than “6 7 8 9 10”, you will only hear the “A B”. With some 

 

 

other digital recording devices because the recording which is overwriting  

 

 

is shorter than the original recording, there will be some of the old  

 

 

dictation still heard which confuses the person transcribing and could 

 

 

create some problems in the documentation. In this case, the playback  

 

 

might be heard as “1 2 3 4 5 A B 

8 9 10
