4: Advanced Node Board Setup
Install Memory
Caution:
Exercise extreme care when installing or removing DIMM modules to prevent damage
to the node board or DIMM module.
The node board provides eight 240-pin DIMM sockets that can support up to 64 GB of error
correction code (ECC) fully buffered DIMM (FBDIMM) DDR2-800/667 SDRAM (for a total of
128 GB in the system). The memory scheme is interleaved; therefore, you must always add
memory to two memory DIMM slots at a time. Table 4-2 lists how to optimize your DIMM
installation. Figure 4-11 shows the DIMM slot designations and bank locations on the node board.
Memory Layout
The memory controller hub (MCH) supports FBDIMM in dual-channel mode. There are a
maximum of eight DIMMs in each node board and DIMMs must be populated in groups of two
(a DIMM pair).
There are four DIMM pairs as follows:
•
DIMM pair 1: 1A and 2A
•
DIMM pair 2: 3A and 4A
•
DIMM pair 3: 1B and 2B
•
DIMM pair 4: 3B and 4B
A minimum of one DIMM pair must be installed. Figure 4-6 illustrates the minimum population
for such a configuration.
