The power bridge rectifier rectifies the mains voltage. Then it is supplied as fix DC
voltage to the capacitors of the first DC link. This ensures that only active power is
withdrawn from the mains (no need for reactive power).
The fix DC link voltage is transformed to a second DC link by means of the power
DC/DC converter (IGBT technology). The produced DC voltage is proportional to the
required motor voltage. The high clock frequency of the DC/DC converter (12 kHz)
ensures very good control dynamics and stability of the motor voltage.
The DC voltage produced in the second DC link is inverted by means of the power
output stages and supplied to the motor via the output terminals. The motor frequency
and the switching frequency of the power output stages are proportional. This avoids
beats in the motor current.
The frequency converter technology (PAM) described in this manual meets all require‐
ments in the field of converter-operated high speed motors and offers the advantage of
loss minimization in the motor and frequency converter.

If a motor is decelerated faster than by natural friction losses, the motor works as
generator. The energy fed back during generator operation is converted to heat by a
ballast circuit integrated in the frequency converter.
