Troubleshooting
Refer to the Yanmar manual for service and troubleshooting guide. Diesel
engines have a reputation for being very reliable provided they are serviced
regularly and best quality diesel engine oil, fuel filters and water impellors are
used. There is an old adage for diesel engines that give them clean fuel, the
best oil and good cooling water flow that they will go forever.
Air or air bubbles in the fuel will stop the engine. They will be evident in the
fuel pre-filter bowl. The source of this air will most likely be seating of the fuel
pre filter but other fuel hose connections need to be checked also. An engine
will usually start once the air is passed through the fuel injectors. If it does not
start then a more technical process of bleeding the fuel system is required. This
is a simple process for a qualified mechanic and can be done by technically
inclined owners.
Overheating will also stop an engine. A check that good coolant water flow is
coming out the exhaust should be done every time an engine is started. Poor
flow is most likely caused by coolant water pump impellor failure or debris
covering the sail drive leg water inlet. The sail drive water inlet can be checked
by snorkeling under the boat. Coolant water inlet grates are located on each
side of the sail drive leg about half way down. Coolant water impellors would
normally be replaced with every engine service. Impellors can fail prematurely
that are poor quality or take in abrasive material such as sandy silt. Spare
impellors should be kept on board.
Engine controls should be regularly lubricated and adjusted if necessary to
ensure smooth operation. Engine controls that are not smooth to operate should
be immediately serviced.
