Steering Systems
Hydraulic Steering
Boats with two helm positions are normally fitted with a hydraulic steering system. There is very little routine
maintenance required however the oil level and system pressure should be regularly checked at the Reservalve.
The Reservalve container can be found in the engine compartment of a stern drive boat or on the transom of a
shaft drive boat. The minimum oil level is marked on the container and the level can be viewed through a sight
glass. A pressure gauge is fitted at the top of the reservalve and should read between 25 - 30 Psi. To re-pressurise
the system there is a valve on top of the Reservalve and by using a foot pump or bicycle pump the air pressure can
be increased. To add hydraulic oil, first remove the air valve to release the pressure and then the filler plug can be
removed to allow topping up.
Bleeding Hydraulic Steering
For instructions on bleeding the system please refer to the manufacturers instructions which are mounted upon the

Power Assisted Steering
Engines equipped with power assisted steering operate on a hydraulic system. Fitted to one engine is the power
steering pump, and then at the stern the hydraulic ram is connected to the stern drive steering linkage. Power
steering is virtually maintenance free. Periodically check the oil level, belt tension and hose connections. Refer to
the manufacturer’s handbook for oil type.
Power Steering Belt Tension
Regular inspection and lubrication of steering cables, linkages and helm assemblies should be made. Signs of
corrosion, cracking, loosening of fastenings or excessive wear should be repaired immediately, deterioration of the
various assemblies due to lack of maintenance could lead to serious steering problems.
