Blank Preparation

 1.  You will need to cut the blank into two sections. Hold the

Upper and Lower Tubes up to the blank to mark the location

of the cut. Each section of the blank should be 1/4" longer

    than its tube.

 2.  Mark a line lengthwise on the blank across the cut line.

This will help you maintain grain alignment during turning

    and assembly.

 3.  Crosscut the blank at the cut line.

4.  Turn the blank sections on end so that the ends formed by

your cut are facing up. Locate the center of these ends by

drawing diagonal lines from corner to corner.

5.  Install a 1

" Diameter Forstner bit (50510, sold separately)

in a Forstner Bit Extender (32937, sold separately) and chuck

the extender in a drill press. Secure one of the blank sections

(“X” end up) in a vise or clamp. Make sure that the blank is

perfectly perpendicular to the drill press table, and center it

    under the bit.

6.  Set the drill press speed to 500 rpm and slowly drill the

hole down the center of the blank, stopping 1/8" short

    of the bottom.

7.  Repeat Steps 5 and 6 to drill out the center of the other

    blank section.

8.  Cut away the 1/8" left at the closed end of each blank section

to expose the hole. Make sure that each section will remain

slightly longer than the tube it will hold.

 Excessive heat buildup during drilling

could lead to cracking of the blank sections. To minimize

heat buildup, drill about 1/4"-1/2" at a time, regularly backing

out the bit to clear the chips. Also, stop 1/8" short of the end

of the blank sections to prevent blowout.
